The symposium will showcase the progress being made in the field of nanocoatings in four Horizon Europe projects (MIRIA, RELIANCE, SUSAAN, PROPLANET). The innovative solutions presented have the potential to significantly impact public health, environmental sustainability, and industrial efficiency. The four projects – each with its specific strategy – will contribute to the creation of a safer environment: in the case of MIRIA, RELIANCE, and SUSAAN by developing antimicrobial nanocoatings to contrast cross contamination on high-traffic objects; in the case of PROPLANET, by substituting PFAS-based coatings with non-toxic, non-regrettable, SSbD substitutes. MIRIA will develop and validate various nanocoatings (i.e., inorganic-based and hybrid organic- inorganic-based) in the challenging case of the various surfaces present in a hospital operating room. RELIANCE will develop smart response self-disinfectant antimicrobial nanocoatings based on a new range of smart antimicrobial nanoparticles consisting of mesoporous silica nanoparticles with metallic copper in their structure, modified with biobased bioactive compounds. SUSAAN will produce sustainable, active-response antimicrobial coatings using bio-based and inorganic nanomaterials. PROPLANET will develop sol-gel-based hybrid nanocoatings with hydrophobic and anti-soiling properties for low-maintenance glass applications, and with non-stick and anti-wear properties for application in food-packaging machines. | |||||||
